[Avionics Magazine 12-7-2016] Rockwell Collins is bringing new regional sand and dust storm forecasting information to its ArincDirect flight-planning platform. The aerospace and defense manufacturer made the announcement about the upgrade to ArincDirect at the Middle East and North Africa Business Aviation Association (MEBAA) show in Dubai on Monday, Dec. 6.  The integration is currently in beta testing for the ArincDirect flight support platform.

According to Rockwell Collins, the sue of the new forecasts will help operators identify in advance areas where visibility is forecast to be limited by blowing dust/sand, which could impact go/no-go flight decisions. Photo: Rockwell Collins.

According to the announcement, the new forecasting data being integrated into ArincDirect is sourced and exclusively licensed from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, host of the first World Meteorological Organization’s Regional Specialized Meteorological Center. Government authorities have been using the data for air quality monitoring, as well as industrial and aviation interests.
