Chene’s appointment is effective immediately, as he looks to continue Europe’s modernization of its air traffic system, similar to FAA’s NextGen project in the
U.S. According to a statement from Eurocontrol, Chene was selected based on his experience in the aviation industry. He first joined the European Commission in 1976 in the office of the Directorate General for Transport.

“I am extremely pleased to lead SJU during this period of transition,” said Chene.

Former SESAR Joint Undertaking chief Patrick Ky resigned from the position after begin appointed as the director of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) earlier this year.
