[Avionics Today 10-03-2016] NASA and France’s Office National d’Etudes et de Recherches Aerospatiales (ONERA) signed an agreement Sept. 30 to collaborate on research that focuses on mitigating the effects of civil air transportation noise, during bilateral meetings in Daejeon, South Korea.

“Noise is a major issue affecting not only the aviation community, but citizens around the world that live near active airports,” said Jaiwon Shin, associate administrator of NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. “This agreement with ONERA establishes a partnership in the area of mitigation of aircraft noise research to create a synergistic effect that just can’t be achieved when working alone.”

Under the agreement, NASA and ONERA will work together to advance technology in the areas of aircraft noise prediction and understanding human response to aircraft noise through validation of models using advanced measurement methods and comprehensive data sets. The agreement creates a forum through which both agencies can share technical knowledge and data in order to independently improve their own capabilities with the overall objective of mitigating the effects of civil air transportation noise.
