[Avionics Today 04-01-2016] Defense and security company Saab has been awarded a contract to deploy Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) surveillance systems around the Colombian cities of Cucuta and Medellin for the country’s Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), Aeronautica Civil de Colombia (Aerocivil).

Saab will be working with its local Colombian partner, Entelcom, to install an array of its latest multilateration and Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) ground stations to provide surveillance of the Cucuta and Medellin approach sectors. Saab’s system aims to improve the safety of flights operating in the visual corridor between Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport (SKMD) and Jose Maria Cordova International Airport (SKRG) by providing coverage in areas that traditional radar cannot reach.
