[Avionics Today 01-28-2015] Japan Airlines (JAL) has signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Aircraft to purchase 32 Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) aircraft. JAL and Mitsubishi Aircraft signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) on Aug. 28, 2014, and have moved forward to conclude this agreement on Jan. 28.

The MJR is Japan’s first domestically produced aircraft in more than 30 years. Testing is currently taking place toward the aircraft’s first flight, which is scheduled for sometime in 2015. Deliveries are slated to begin in 2017 with deliveries to JAL to commence in 2021.

“JAL will operate the MRJ as the key aircraft of its regional jet fleet,” said Yoshiharu Ueki, president of Japan Airlines. “As a network carrier that also operates regional jets, we are contributing to the birth of Japan’s first passenger jet.”
