BAE Systems has appointed Gerard DeMuro, formerly of General Dynamics, as the new chief executive of its U.S. operations, the U.K.-based aerospace and defense manufacturer said Tuesday, Jan. 7.
DeMuro will take over the position on Feb. 1, succeeding Linda Hudson, the first woman to lead a major U.S. aerospace and defense contractor. The new CEO will take over during a challenging period for BAE, as the company seeks to grow its commercial avionics product offerings in a reduced defense-spending environment.
Hudson will remain with BAE in an advisory role for the company through the end of May.
The U.S. unit of BAE Systems is referred to within BAE as "Inc." to differentiate between its London-based parent company BAE Systems PLC.
According to BAE, DeMuro’s past experience with General Dynamics and tenure as a Pentagon acquisition official make him the perfect replacement for Hudson.
“His experience successfully running complex businesses known for developing cutting-edge technology for diverse international, commercial and government customers will greatly benefit BAE Systems, Inc. as it evolves its strategic focus toward expanding international and commercial business opportunities," said Ian King, chief executive of BAE Systems PLC.
