Aeroflex announced a new feature for its GPSG-1000 Portable GPS Simulator, the ability to simulate Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) Localizer Performance with Virtual Guidance (LPV) runway approaches.

FAA originally introduced WAAS wide area reference stations in 1992 to provide the integration of GPS signals for precision approaches. The new feature from Aeroflex reduces the flight demonstration time required by FAA for installers of WAAS enabled navigation systems by enabling them to perform the following procedures from the aircraft hangar:

-Dynamic motion tests of a WAAS/LPV installation and
-Testing of the sensitivity and dynamic range of an airborne GPS receiver without leaving the aircraft hangar
-Provide data for documenting proper FAA processes of WAAS/LPV system upgrades

Aeroflex said the new WAAS/LPV-enabled GPSG-1000 is available now, with a software upgrade coming in April. More
