Mexico’s Volaris Airlines selected Honeywell’s LED product to upgrade its Airbus A320 navigation wingtip lighting. Honeywell said the product is a drop-in replacement for existing lighting, it does not require any aircraft modification, and it does not add additional weight. “This upgrade saves operators in downtime and maintenance, since the lifespan increases from 500 hours to 20,000 hours with LED,” said Jeff Johnston, Vice President of Platform Components. “Volaris benefits from fewer lamp changes, lower spares inventory and lower labor costs.” Volaris will retrofit wingtip lighting on 20 Airbus A320s beginning this month, with completion scheduled by early 2010. After December 2009, Honeywell LED lighting will be standard on new production Airbus A320 aircraft.
