InterSense, Bedford, Mass., said Rockwell Collins selected its hybrid IS-900 inertial-acoustic helmet tracking system for the Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (AVCATT) Helmet Mounted Display modification and upgrade program. Financial terms were not disclosed. AVCATT is a mobile, transportable, virtual simulation training system designed to provide Army aviation with the capability to conduct realistic, high intensity training exercises and mission rehearsals. The system allows pilots to train and rehearse through networked simulation in a collective and combined arms simulated battlefield environment. Rockwell Collins was awarded the contract through the U.S. Army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation Training and Instrumentation in August. The contract calls for Rockwell Collins to provide the program with the SimEye SR100A HMD. In order to provide a fully integrated solution to meet these requirements, Rockwell Collins has integrated the IS-900 MiniTrax sensor directly into the HMD. The new design not only reduces the weight on the pilot’s helmet, but also decreases the calibration time required between the head tracker and the HMD display.
