Air Traffic controllers at Ho Chi Minh City International Airport in Vietnam began using a new advanced surface movement guidance and control system (A-SMGCS) recently, the A3000 from Saab subsidiary HITT.

The A3000 uses surveillance data from a new surface movement radar (SMR) to locate all aircraft and vehicles operating on the airport’s runways and taxiways. The system will soon have the capability to integrate multilateration and Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) surveillance in the near future, according to Saab.

Controllers at Ho Chi Minh will also be able to use the system’s recording and replay of voice communications along with the traffic display picture.

“The A3000 also provides VATMC with a flexible system that can grow with the airport and expand to include solutions such as electronic flight strips and Collaborative Decision Making systems," said Ken Kaminski, general manager of Saab ATM.

Currently the A3000 is deployed at more than 40 airports worldwide, including multiple locations in Europe, Asia and South America.
