Holt Integrated Circuits has provided IC data bus solutions to the avionics industry for more than 20 years, supplying more than 400 manufacturers worldwide in a wide variety of applications such as flight control, navigation, engine management, communications, safety equipment and in-flight entertainment systems.

Holt’s range of ICs supporting the ARINC 429 standard is the widest in the industry, providing a large selection of protocol ICs, line drivers, line receivers and fully integrated solutions with RAM. Many devices include integrated DC/DC converters for single 3.3V or 5V operation, or on-board DO-160G, Level 3 lightning protection. They are found in almost every commercial aircraft flying today and are also deployed in numerous military helicopter programs including the Blackhawk, Apache and Comanche. Holt also offers components for MIL-STD-1553 and EBR-1553 (MMSI) standards, including integrated terminals, transceivers and transformers. Holt’s MIL-STD-1553 products are used in programs such as F-16, Bradley Fighting Vehicle, JDAM and Airbus A-350 XWB. In addition, Holt also offers Discrete-to-Digital sensing ICs, ARINC 825 compliant CAN, ARINC 717, analog switches and RS-485/422 solutions.

All of Holt’s products are DO-254 Certifiable and are available in industrial (-40°C to +85°C) or extended (-55°C to +125°C) temperature ranges. Optional burn-in is available on many products.

ARINC 429 and Discrete-to-Digital Sensing Components

Holt Integrated Circuits is the leading supplier of ARINC 429 IC components worldwide. Over the years, Holt has taken its products to a unique level of integration, unprecedented in the industry. Holt is the only supplier to integrate DO-160G, Level 3 lightning protection into an ARINC 429 line driver, HI-8597, eliminating numerous external components, like power resistors and transient voltage suppressors. Holt also eliminates additional external power supplies by integrating DC/DC converters to allow single-supply 3.3V operation. This translates to significant board space and cost savings. Single-supply operation has also been ported to Holt’s fully integrated ARINC 429 devices, for example HI-3593 includes two receive channels with built-in analog line receivers, one transmit channel with built-in line driver and integrated DC/DC converter, 256 programmable label filters and 32-word receive and transmit FIFOs, communicating with an external microprocessor via 4-wire SPI host interface.

Holt recently updated its discrete-to-digital product line to provide additional features and flexibility. The HI-8425/HI-8430 families provide octal GND/Open or 28V/Open sensors with output drivers and programmable sense thresholds. The HI-8435 provides 32 channels of GND/Open or 28V/Open sensors and a host Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). The sense input thresholds and hysteresis are programmable via SPI bus and all 32 sense output states may be read simultaneously with a single SPI command. The HI-8470 introduces a new concept for simple sensing applications. It is a 100 percent pin-programmable device requiring neither software or MCU, significantly reducing software certification costs. Sixteen sense channels have GND/Open or 28V/Open inputs whose outputs are transmitted directly onto an ARINC 429 bus via an integrated line driver. The 3.3V line driver is similar to HI-8597, integrating a DC/DC converter and DO-160G Level 3 lightning protection.

MIL-STD-1553 Components

Holt supplies integrated terminals, transceivers and transformers for MIL-STD-1553 and EBR-1553 (MMSI) applications. The latest terminal solution, HI-2130, integrates MIL-STD-1553 protocol, transceivers and transformers in a compact 15mm by 15mm BGA package, the most compact MIL-STD-1553 IC solution available today. The device allows concurrent operation of four MIL-STD-1553 functions: BC, MT and two independent RTs. Other features include SPI and 16-bit parallel host interfaces, 64 KBytes RAM and auto-initialization. The HI-6130 and HI-6131 devices offer the same functionality as the HI-2130, without transformers, in common plastic packages, including the smallest terminal in the world, a compact 9mm by 9mm QFN. Holt also offers standalone MIL-STD-1553 transceivers and transformers to support customer FPGA designs, notably the 3.3V HI-1579 and dual PM-DB2762 respectively. These devices are commonly recognized as industry leading, lowest power and footprint.
