Honeywell upgraded its IntuVue aircraft weather radar system, adding capabilities to detect turbulence, hail and lightning for pilots in advance of approaching storm cells.

The upgrade will be offered initially as a retrofit option for the Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft, as Honeywell continues to work with OEMs to obtain international certifications for all platforms to use IntuVue including the Boeing 777, Airbus A320s and Gulfstream G650.

“Until now, aircraft damage and unstable flights resulting from hail and lightningwere problems airlines and passengers had to accept. This new radar upgradeempowers pilots to avoid storm cells that have the potential to produce hail and lightning, spot turbulence earlier, and identify the precise location of heavy rain clouds to maximize passenger comfort and safety,” said John Bolton president air transport and regional at Honeywell Aerospace.
