ADS-B: Progress and Implementation
A Webinar presented by Avionics Magazine

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), the broadcast of GPS-derived aircraft position to the ground and between aircraft, is considered a cornerstone technology of the Next Generation Air Transportation (NextGen) system in the United States. A similar transformation in air-traffic control is taking place across the border in Canada as well as in Australia.

With promised benefits for safety, operational efficiency and airspace capacity, ADS-B provides surveillance in non-radar airspace, tighter aircraft separations, closer spacing on final approach and better situational awareness of the airport surface.

Since the selection of an industry team headed by ITT Corp. in August 2007, the ADS-B program in the United States has achieved significant milestones, establishing "essential" services in southern Florida one year after contract award. ADS-B "critical" services, the presentation of aircraft targets on air-traffic controller displays, were initiated at Louisville and Houston in late 2009. In parallel, FAA's long-awaited, "performance-based" equipment rule, expected this spring, will define the avionics needed by 2020.

Nav Canada announced the first flight over Hudson Bay using ADS-B in January 2009. Canada also is introducing ADS-B coverage off its northeastern coast, allowing surveillance of aircraft using the busy North Atlantic track system.

What is the status ADS-B deployments in the United States and Canada? What milestones are planned for 2010 and beyond? What has been the experience of operating ADS-B sites? What new avionics will be required of airspace users?

For answers to these and other questions, we've assembled some of the principals behind industry and government efforts to introduce ADS-B. This Avionics Magazine Webinar, "ADS-B: Progress and Implementation," will provide the latest information available on ADS-B deployments, including ground infrastructure status, operational sites and aircraft equipage requirements. And the webinar is interactive: registrants can pose questions to the speakers for discussion in real time.

Among discussion points:

  • What is the status of ADS-B deployments in the United States and Canada?
  • What is the operational experience of sites now providing ADS-B service?
  • What does FAA say about ADS-B in its 2010 NextGen Implementation Plan?
  • What are the equipage requirements of FAA’s “performance-based” ADS-B rulemaking?
  • What further applications are planned for ADS-B “In” displays in aircraft?
  • Will ADS-B be available nationwide in the United States, as planned, by 2013?

...and lots more!

How does the Webinar work?

It's easy and convenient! You just need RealPlayer or Windows Media Player installed on your computer. If you do not have either, please follow the instructions below to download and install them. Or if you prefer, a phone for the audio and an Internet connection to let you watch the slides and other information on the Web will suffice. No other downloads or special hardware - a dial-up connection will work fine.

  • One (1) set of materials (you may make copies for all of the persons you invited to listen to the program);
  • One (1) toll-free connection to the seminar (if you select the audio connection), and
  • One (1) Internet connection to the seminar.

Use speakers on your computer or speakerphone on your telephone and invite your entire staff to attend for FREE!

What equipment do I need?

For the audio connection:

  • A computer with RealPlayer or Windows Media Player installed. When you log into the Virtual Seminar, your computer will be taken through a brief configuration check and will let you know if you're missing any software.
  • If you do not have RealPlayer or Windows, a touch-tone telephone will work also. It works best to use a speakerphone so that others can listen too.

For the Internet connection:

  • PC: 166Mhz Pentium-based PC or better
  • Operating system: Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP
  • Browser: For optimal viewing experience, we recommend using Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. However, any version of IE 4.0 or higher will work. For Netscape, only versions 4.x are supported at this time.
  • Internet connection: 28.8 or faster connection
  • Display set at 1024 x 768 or 800 x 600
