Airport Surface Management: Enhancing Safety, Situational Awareness on Runways and Taxiways
A Webinar presented by Avionics Magazine

Managing aircraft and vehicular traffic on busy airport surfaces is important both for reasons of safety and operational efficiency. From the aspect of safety, serious runway incursions in which collisions were narrowly avoided have declined by half since 2001 in the United States out of some 58 million operations. But runway incursions of all types have been on the rise in recent years.

The improved management of airport arrivals, departures, taxi and ramp operations, with expanded surveillance and real-time data sharing, has been identified as a key operational capability for achieving the Next Generational Air Transportation System (NextGen). Another enabler will be to improve airport access by using closely spaced parallel, converging and intersecting runways in reduced visibility conditions.

FAA's recent Surface Indications and Alerts (SURFIA) program explored the use of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) aircraft position reporting in the cockpit for surface operations. One aim of the program was to see if ADS-B alerts in the cockpit matched those of the Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) on controller displays. ADS-B position reports already are becoming available to controllers for terminal area separations.

What else is being brought to bear for airport surface management? For this Avionics Magazine Webinar, "Airport Surface Management: Enhancing Safety, Situational Awareness on Runways and Taxiways," we've assembled representatives of some of the leading providers of surface surveillance systems for use by pilots and air-traffic controllers. The hour-long panel discussion will provide the latest information available on industry and government efforts to enhance safety and improve efficiency of airport surface operations. And the webinar is interactive: registrants can pose questions to the speakers for discussion in real time.

Among discussion points:

  • What technologies and equipment are being evaluated for bringing airport surface traffic information into the cockpit?
  • What were the intent and results of FAA’s Surface Indications and Alerts (SURFIA) demonstration program?
  • What is the status of equipping major U.S. airports with the Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) system?
  • What is the status of FAA’s Low Cost Ground Surveillance System evaluation at small and medium-sized airports?
  • How do Runway Status Lights contribute to runway safety and situational awareness?

...and lots more!

What equipment do I need?

For the audio connection:

  • A computer with RealPlayer or Windows Media Player installed. When you log into the Virtual Seminar, your computer will be taken through a brief configuration check and will let you know if you're missing any software.
  • If you do not have RealPlayer or Windows, a touch-tone telephone will work also. It works best to use a speakerphone so that others can listen too.

For the Internet connection:

  • PC: 166Mhz Pentium-based PC or better
  • Operating system: Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP
