UTC to Provide Carbon Brakes for Xiamen 787s

Xiamen Airlines, a subsidiary of China Southern Airlines, has reached an agreement with UTC Aerospace Systems to provide carbon brakes and wheels for its new fleet of Boeing 787-8 aircraft, as the airline looks to gain cost savings on the brake performance.

UTC uses carbon heat sink material that it refers to as Duracarb, and claims to produce costs savings and a "35 percent brake life advantage" over competing brake systems. "Due to the new technology of the 787 electric brake, electro-mechanical braking experience was a critical factor in our supplier selection," said Tang Jianqi, general manager of maintenance and engineering at Xiamen Airlines.

The first 787 is scheduled for delivery to the Chinese carrier in July 2014.
