Transportation Secretary Nominee Moves Closer to Confirmation

By Woodrow Bellamy III

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation on Monday approved the nomination of Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to become the nation's next Transportation Secretary.
Voting was unanimous for Foxx, setting up the next step in the process which would require a vote from the full Senate to officially confirm him to replace existing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Both Transportation Committee Chairman John Rockefeller IV (D-W. Va.) and Ranking Member John Thune (R-S.D.) have said they expect an easy confirmation of Foxx.
During his recent confirmation hearing, Foxx discussed his commitment to FAA's NextGen program, and urged more government-industry collaboration to keep the agency on track with its air transportation modernization project.

"While I have had a number of concerns regarding the lack of sequester planning by the Department of Transportation, I look forward to moving ahead and working directly with Mayor Foxx if he is confirmed as our next Secretary of Transportation. Mayor Foxx has assured me that he will improve communication with the Commerce Committee and other members of Congress and I look forward to working with him to address the transportation challenges facing our country," said Thune.
