Sky King Fined $500,000 for Flight Cancellations
The Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a $500,000 fine to Lakeland, Fla.-based charter carrier Sky King for violating public charter flight regulations.
The fine results from Sky King operating flights for Myrtle Beach Direct Air & Tours, which ceased operations in March 2012. Sky King was one of several public charters that stopped operating flights for Direct Air due to non-payment.
DOT said Sky King continued to operate charter flights for Direct Air without requiring full payment, which is a violation of its regulations regarding charter flights. Sky King terminated all flights under its public charter program for Direct Air in March 2012, and failed to ensure return flights for round-trip passengers who traveled on the carrier for the outbound portion of their trips.
Direct Air’s shutdown is still under investigation, and Sky King is the fourth carrier to receive a fine related to the shutdown. More
