Bombardier CSeries Engine Earns Transport Canada Type Certification
Transport Canada granted type certification for the Pratt & Whitney PW1500G, clearing the way for it to power Bombardier’s CSeries aircraft.
The PW1500G is Pratt & Whitney’s first PurePowered Geared Turbofan engine to earn type certification in Canada. The engine’s advanced gear system allows the engine fan to operate at a different speed than the compressor and turbines, contributing to better fuel efficiency and noise reduction, Pratt & Whitney said.
“To date we have conducted over 9,000 hours of testing on our Fan Drive Gear System, demonstrating the service readiness of our gearbox. We have also validated the improvement in fuel efficiency and noise reduction that we targeted in 2007, when we launched the PurePower PW1500G program,” said Bob Saia, vice president of the next generation product family at Pratt & Whitney.
Bombardier is currently completing the final assembly of the first CSeries test flight aircraft and plans to enter the first CSeries into commercial service later this year. More
