on Friday proposed a new $2.75 million fine against Boeing
resulting from a 2008 investigation into its manufacturing process that discovered the company was using non-regulation fasteners on its 777 wide-body aircraft.
According to an agency statement, Boeing
submitted plans to address the fastener issue, and eventually took action to correct the problem in November 2010. However FAA
is still seeking the fine because it believes the company's "underlying manufacturing issues" within its quality control system remained in place after it stopped using the nonconforming fasteners.
"Manufacturers must make it a priority to identify and correct quality problems in a timely manner,” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, commenting on the fine.
According to a spokesperson from Boeing, the company is currently "working closely with the FAA to ensure we understand and address any remaining concerns with this proposed penalty."
The fine comes amid scrutiny on another Boeing commercial aircraft, the 787, which FAA recently issued a new airworthiness directive on
regarding a recent fire on an Ethiopian Airlines 787 that safety officials believe was caused by the plane's emergency locator transmitter (ELT) system.
Boeing has 30 days to respond to the agency's proposed fine.
