Americans Among Dead in Peru Helicopter Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating a Chinook BH-234 cargo helicopter crash in Peru that killed five Americans and two Peruvian crew members on Tuesday.

The helicopter, owned by Aurora, Ore.-based Columbia Helicopters, crashed in Pucallpa, Peru shortly after taking off.

“We may operate globally, but we are still very much a family. The loss of our employees hurts deeply, and I knew most of these men personally. Our employees are grieving, and we are praying for the family members of the friends we lost,” said Michael Fahey, president of Columbia Helicopters.

Witnesses told local media outlets that the helicopter lost control and emitted smoke before crashing. All crew members killed in the crash were Columbia Helicopters employees. Neither Columbia nor NTSB had any immediate information on the cause of the crash. More
