Qatar Airways has signed an agreement for a $2.8-billion order of up to nine Boeing
777-300ER passenger aircraft. The agreement includes two firm orders, with options for an additional seven aircraft.
The first two 777-300ERs are scheduled for handover to Qatar in 2014, with the options and delivery schedule for the other seven aircraft likely to be confirmed at that time. CEO Akbar Al-Baker said the newly ordered 777s will be used to open up more direct flights to new destinations in the U.S. and other long-haul locations from its base in Doha.
In February, Boeing
increased its 777 production rate to eight airplanes per month, citing increased demand.
