Human Factors in Helicopter Operations
The term "human factors" has grown increasingly popular as the aviation industry has realized that human error, rather than mechanical failure, underlies most aviation accidents and incidents. The human element is the most complex part of any operation, and in helicopter ops are even more complex. Human factors involves gathering information about human abilities, limitations, and other characteristics and applying it to tools, machines, systems, tasks, jobs, and environments to produce safe, comfortable, and effective human use.
11:40 a.m. – 12:40 p.m.
IFR for the VFR Pilot
Staying current is a good idea, but is easier said than done for many helicopter operators. What kind of training does your operation offer for inadvertent IMC?

Adding to Your Fleet
Safety begins here, with new aircraft selection. It’s one thing to buy a new car…but a multi-million dollar asset that can make or break your business is another thing altogether. From selecting the right machine to accomplish your mission to outfitting it to maximize safety (and prevent avoidable expenses after delivery), you need input from experts who can help you target selection criteria and avoid the pitfalls.

How to be an Effective Safety Officer
Being an effective safety officer requires more than meets the eye. SMS, human factors, risk management, aviation safety program management and the legal aspects of aviation. An effective safety officer can offer a better understanding on how humans can most safely and efficiently be integrated with the technology. If you have been tasked with this responsibility, learn best practices and how to do it right from those who have been there.

Protecting Yourself in an Accident Investigation
Some call it the worst case scenario: an aircraft accident with serious or fatal injuries to employees, family or clients. Emotions can run deep. The mere thought of it conjures deep feelings of denial. Unfortunately, the only difference between that kind of loss and denying it could ever happen to you is that the denial is much worse. That is because there is nothing you can do about preventing the event now that it has happened. The families must be notified and provided for. The press, the NTSB and the FAA will call. The NTSB deserves your thoughtful cooperation. But you need to plan and practice for that event because, when it happens, everyone will be counting on you.
12:20 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Closing Remarks
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
