LCDR Deutermann currently serves as the Flight Safety Department Head of Coast Guard Air Station Miami. Following graduation from the University of Florida in 1991 with a degree in Economics and a commission in the Navy, his first assignment was to the helicopter squadron HSL-42 in Mayport, FL while he awaited flight training in Pensacola. He then completed flight school in 1993 and was assigned to fly the HH-46D “SeaKnight” helicopter with HC-5 based on the island of Guam. During this tour he qualified in and conducted missions ranging from Search and Rescue in support of the US Coast Guard, Carrier Battle Group operations, Helo-Firefighting, Special Warfare Unit Deliveries, & the first NVG Shipboard SAR detachments aboard Amphibious Ready Groups in the Pacific. He completed his tour in 1997 and received orders to become a Helicopter Flight Instructor with HT-8 in Pensacola Fl. During this final tour with the Navy, he specialized as a Familiarization instructor and taught U.S. and international students basic helicopter flight maneuvers and instrument flying. He also served as a Standardization pilot for the Instructor Training Unit, where he taught instructional techniques and principals to newly assigned instructors. In the fall of 2000 he received his Master’s Degree in Management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and shortly thereafter completed his obligation with the Navy in December that same year.
LCDR Deutermann entered the Coast Guard New Year’s Day of 2001 through the Direct Commission Aviator program and was assigned to Air Station Savannah to fly the HH-65A Dolphin. There he performed multiple SAR missions and was involved in the development of a variety of new USCG aviation capabilities that were desired following 9/11. In 2004, he was assigned to the Helicopter Interdiction Squadron (HITRON) in Jacksonville, FL where he flew the militarized version of the Agusta 109E. During five “Airborne Use of Force/Counter Drug” deployments, he successfully completed 10 counter drug interdictions utilizing machine gun warning shots and engine disabling fire via the crew served.50 cal rifle, resulting in the interdiction nearly 15,000 lbs of cocaine in both the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean oceans. He later was designated as an instructor pilot in the A-109E, specializing in maritime low altitude tactical operations and NVG ship operations. In 2005 he graduated from the Naval Aviation Safety Officer school in Pensacola, Fl and ultimately became the HITRON Safety Department Head.
LCDR Deutermann has completed advanced education in Safety Management Systems, completed accident investigation courses from the National Transportation Safety Board, and has served as an investigator for a catastrophic aircraft mishap. In 2007, he transferred to Air Station Miami and re-qualified as a SAR Aircraft Commander, and in 2008 he took a second assignment in the Flight Safety realm. He has extensive experience as a Crew Resource Management instructor and has presented CRM and ORM training for Coast Guard, Navy, and Law Enforcement aviation units to include NYPD aircrew, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division aviation branch, and Miami Dade Fire Rescue aviation branch. He has accumulated over 5000 hours flight experience and currently is designated a unit Flight Examiner in the MH-65C.
