Members of the NH National Guard received a call from the NH Fish and Game to assist in the search of two missing hikers in the area of MT Washington. The crew took off in their UH-60 Blackhawk from their home station in Concord NH. After receiving coordinating instructions, they started their search. Severe weather consisting of freezing rain, snow and wind gusts up to 96 MPH hampered their first attempt. They were called back to the area by Fish and Game and found the two hikers that were now suffering from severe hypothermia. Daring a dangerous landing on a mountian pinacle in high winds, the pilots managed a two point landing while the crewchief exited the aircraft into 5 feet of snow and crawled over 100 feet in blizzard conditions to rescue the only surviving victim. SSG Stohrer then labored to get the victim into the aircraft and after doing so, transported the victim to a local area hospital. The flight crew returned to recover the deceased hiker, and pick up the rescue party who hiked up to the summit to assist.
