New Marine Helicopter Dunker on Duty
Marine Corps aircrews training at Camp Lejeune, N.C. are now able to participate in water egress training in the service’s first indoor helicopter “dunker.” The new device is called the Modular Amphibious Egress Trainer – “MAETS" for short – and simulates the actions of a heavy-lift helicopter going down in water. Trainees are placed aboard the fuselage-shaped shell, which is then dropped into a pool of water. Once it rolls inverted - as helicopters tend to do after ditching - Marines, under the watchful eyes of safety divers, practice exiting the submerged “aircraft” in both day and night conditions.
