Air Methods Reaches Level 4 of SMS Program

Air medical transport operator Air Methods Corp. has achieved the highest level (Level 4) of FAA's voluntary Safety Management System (SMS) program. FAA created the SMS program to provide guidance and recognition of safety efforts implemented by commercial air operators. Level 4 of the program is the final phase of implementation, the "continuous improvement" stage, according to Air Methods.

To achieve Level 4 compliance, the Denver, Colo.-based air medical transport company implemented the following programs more commonly used by commercial airlines; Safety Action Program (ASAP), Maintenance Safety Action Program (MSAP), Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA) Program, Flight Data Monitoring, Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA), and an Internal Evaluation Program (IEP). Air Methods first entered the SMS program in 2009, and is the seventh organization to achieve Level 4, along with American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Miami Air International, NetJets Aviation, PSA, United Airlines and US Airways.
