UK MoD to Integrate New Missile System on Navy, Army AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcats

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has enlisted AgustaWestland to integrate, test and install the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon (FASGW) Heavy and Light missile systems onto 28 Royal Navy AW159 Wildcat helicopters. The contract, worth approximately $150 million, was announced at the Farnborough Air Show last week.

The missiles, the MBDA Future Anti Surface Guided Weapon (Heavy)/ Anti Navire Léger (FASGW (Heavy)/ANL) and the Thales Light Multirole Missile (LMM) (FASGW (Light)), will be integrated onto the airframes to improve the rotorcraft’s attack ability on various coastal and land targets.

The FASGW (Heavy)/ANL missiles feature a two-way data link that sends images back to the operator who can either remain in control of the missile or opt for autonomous engagement. The Thales LMM is designed as a precision strike missile that provides rapid reaction to surface naval and on-land threats.

AgustaWestland will produce a total of 62 AW159 Wildcat helicopters, sending 28 to the Royal Navy and 34 to the British Army.
