Navy to Use Closed Airport for Training
The U.S. Navy and the city of Fernandina Beach in Florida are close to a
deal to allow helicopter crews from Naval Station Mayport and Naval Air Station Jacksonville to use a closed municipal airport runway for practicing day
and night landings. Landings would also include the use of night vision
goggles, negating the need for runway lights. Pilots would be asked to
"approach the closed runway" on the west side, according to Airport Manager
Richard Johnson. That would minimize the noise about which the airport
anticipates receiving complaints. More
