NTSB Seeks Hudson Airspace Improvements

While condemning the actions of controllers surrounding the Aug. 8 midair collision of a helicopter and small aircraft over the Hudson River, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended a series of steps to improve traffic coordination and communication in the busy corridor. In a letter to FAA, NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman notes that the safety board “is concerned with the complacency and inattention to duty evidenced by the actions of the TEB [Teterboro] local controller and the supervisor during the events surrounding this accident,” which claimed the lives of nine people. NTSB is asking FAA to implement various changes to strengthen ATC practices in the Hudson Class B airspace, including revising standard operating procedures at TEB, LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR) airports.
