Flight School Staff Deputized to Support Sheriff

Thirteen pilots and flight instructors at the flight school Upper Limits Aviation have been deputized to work with Utah’s Iron County Sheriff’s Office, providing helicopter air support for local search and rescue missions. The school and the sheriff’s office are headquartered in Cedar City in southwest Utah, and Upper Limits has long volunteered staff and aircraft to support the sheriff’s office’s work. Deputization is intended to keep that activity from running afoul of FAA regulations by having Upper Limits pilots work as deputy sheriffs during air missions that are launched a couple of times each month. It also give’s the sheriff’s office an abundant air resource. Upper Limits, which has flight schools in Salt Lake City and Murietta, Calif., has 37 Robinsons in Cedar City. The Utah Highway Patrol has transferred one of its helicopters from Cedar City to Salt Lake City.
