British Test New Sea King Rotor Blades

The British defense technology firm QinetiQ completed the first test flight of advanced, composite main-rotor blades on its Sea King helicopter. Carson Helicopters of the United States produced the blades, which are based ones it developed for use on its Sikorsky S-61 firefighting aircraft. They use advanced aerofoil sections, increased twist and a swept tip, designed to produce significant performance gains. Data from the four-minute flight indicated they did just that, according to QinetiQ. The flight was conducted in cooperation with the U.K. Defense Ministry’s Aircraft Test and Evaluation Centre at Boscombe Down and supported by its Sea King and Future Rotorcraft Capability integrated product teams and AgustaWestland.
