Senior U.S. Air Force officials are briefing members of Congress and their staffs today on its latest effort to pick a new helicopter for combat search and rescue missions. The service sent out a draft request for proposals around midnight on Oct. 23 to the bidders:
Boeing, the team of
Lockheed Martin,
AgustaWestland, and
Bell Helicopter, and
Sikorsky Aircraft. Two separate sets of protests by the other teams overturned the Air Force's selection of
Boeing last November for the $10-billion-plus contract to replace its aging fleet of 100 Sikorsky HH-60G Pave Hawks. The Air Force wants comments on the latest draft request, with the objective of getting new bids from the three by mid-November. That would allow a new contract award for more than 140 aircraft before mid-2008.
