BAE Systems has tested an all-weather cable and obstacle detection system. Using radar, the system would alert pilots to cables and other obstacles in a helicopter’s flight path. Using an analysis of helicopter incidents over the last 10 years, BAE estimates this system would have saved the military more than $500 million and, more importantly, American lives. BAE used Bell’s new 430 test aircraft for the test. The system weighs less than 8 lb and is also being developed for commercial aircraft. It can detect unknown obstacles at distances greater than 2.5 km (1.5 ml). For related news
