Rotorcraft Report: Metro Aviation Expands Facility, Gets Air Log EC135 Work

SERVICES/COMPLETIONS

Metro Aviation, the completions center in Shreveport, La., will be completing two EC135s for Air Logistics. The helicopters are scheduled for offshore use in the Gulf of Mexico. Work is not scheduled to begin until the middle of the year and will take place at Metro Aviation’s soon-to-be opened 160,000-sq-ft management and completion facility close to its current location near the Shreveport airport. More business than it can handle is the reason for the expansion, according to Jim Kettles of Metro Aviation. Kettles said the company, which can complete between 25-30 airframes a year, is looking to double its business. Currently, the company can paint one helicopter at a time, a process that takes two weeks. Other aspects of completion cannot be done while painting an airframe, creating a bottleneck. The new facility will have three paint bays, two devoted specifically to airframe painting. It takes 90-100 days to complete a helicopter. This is Metro Aviation’s 25th year in business and completion of the Air Logistics aircraft will bring its number of EC135 completions to 115.
