Rotorcraft Report: Italian Chinooks

MILITARY | HEAVY LIFT

Boeing and AgustaWestland will be jointly supplying and supporting 16 new Chinook helicopters for the Italian military. The contract is worth $1.23 billion and will run until 2017. The amount includes five years of support.

"At an overall program level, it will be a 50/50 split," said Boeing spokesperson Hal Klopper. Boeing will be building the Chinook fuselages at its Ridley, Pa. plant. AgustaWestland will be designing the specific aircraft configurations for the Italian military and will handle systems integration, assembly and product delivery.

"In determining the areas of work to be performed by the respective companies, we have taken into consideration many factors, such as core competencies, risk mitigation, knowledge of the platform and efficiencies," Klopper said. "Services are included in the collaboration agreement for the life cycle of the product." The first Chinook will be delivered to Italy in 2013.
