Rotorcraft Report: Sagem, ASAP Build Glass Cockpit for R44

Sagem Avionics has built a new, integrated cockpit display system (ICDS) for the Robinson R44. The dual-screen, multi-function ICDS-8 display is an aftermarket option designed to replicate R44’s analog instruments and provide navigation and terrain information. An analog altimeter, airspeed indicator, magnetic compass, and clock remain as back-ups.

The system, which was integrated into the R44 by ASAP Avionics Services of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, presents information in color graphs and dials on a pair of screens each measuring 8.4 in diagonally. The left screen of the demonstration model at Heli-Expo could display systems data, or instantaneously become a monitor served by a small infrared camera mounted on the side of the instrument pedestal. Night-vision goggles compatibility is also an option.

The entire system, which drew a lot of attention from exhibition hall patrons, retails for $75,000 and boasts an installation time of 24 hr.
