Turkey Adding to Police Helicopter Fleet

The National Police Dept. of Turkey has decided to place a stronger emphasis on enforcing security from the air and is purchasing four new police helicopters. Helicopters, according to Today’s Zaman, offer a quicker response to crime than a patrol car on congested city streets. The four helicopters will bring to a total of 16 the number of aircraft in the department’s fleet. They will be assigned to duty over Istanbul. The first six of those helicopters were purchased in early 2006 and have been used in fire fighting, medical evacuation and traffic control. The police have four bases for its helicopters located in Ankara, Istanbul, Ataturk and Adana Sakirpasa airports and the Diyarbakir Unal Erkan Heliport. Work is underway to build a new helicopter base in Izmir. For related news
