Rotorcraft Report: Amphibious Ship Designed to Carry V-22

MILITARY

The U.S. Navy has launched its new San Antonio Class amphibious assault support ship, the first warship of its kind designed to carry and support the Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor. The class will assume the functional duties of older vessels, including LSD-36 Anchorage Class dock landing ships decommissioned in 2004, and LPD-4 Austin Class ships still in service.

Ship designers built the San Antonio Class to deliver Marines and their land support vehicles to operational areas. Previous warship designs incorporated launch, recovery and hangar accommodations for the Sikorsky SH-60 Sea Hawk, which is still in service throughout the Navy and, in its HH-60 variant, the U.S. Coast Guard.
