All in a Day's Work

In two separate rescues, the Coast Guard Sector San Diego, Calif. flew four patients to the hospital in La Jolla, Calif. Using one of their three MH-60 Jayhawks, Lt. Denning flew his crew more than 100 mi for the first rescue. The unit received the call for help at 04:20 and flew to rescue the three boaters who had reported that their vessel was taking on water for days. As Coast Guard Sector San Diego was hoisting them into the helicopter, another call came in from command center, around 06:20, from another vessel about 60 mi from the unit's location. After securing its passengers, the team flew to the other vessel and, within an hour, performed a second rescue. Within a matter of hours, this Coast Guard aviation team had saved four lives.
