Rotorcraft Report: HAI Completes Recognition of Katrina Rescuers
The Helicopter Assn. International has presented more than 600 Igor I. Sikorsky Awards for Humanitarian Service to organizations, companies, and individuals whose helicopters and crews served the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama during and after Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the region in September 2005.
The awards, sponsored by Sikorsky Aircraft to honor its founder, recognizes those individuals or organizations who best demonstrate the values of civilian rotorcraft to society by saving lives, protecting property, and aiding those who need help.
Due to the large number of civilian, government, and military rescuers who pitched in after Katrina, HAI elected to honor them en masse at last year’s Heli-Expo, then provide awards to individuals after their participation in the relief efforts was established.
