Child Starts Unattended Medical Helicopter
An NTSB investigation is underway after six-year-old boy started a medical transport helicopter at an air show. Mayo One, an EC145 operated by the Mayo Clinic's air medical transport service, was on display at Mankato Regional Airport during the Minnesota Air Spectacular, Saturday, June 27. According to a show worker who recorded a video of the event, the boy was able to enter the helicopter through its open doors and start up the engines. The rotor blades began spinning and continued to until a crew member was able to stop the engines. The Mayo Clinic has removed the aircraft from service while it conducts its own investigation.
UPDATE: Investigators now report that a 17-year-old teen was responsible for starting the helicopter, not a six-year-old child as previously believed.
