Simplex Acquires Black Hawk Fire Attack

Portland, Ore.-based Simplex has acquired the rights to produce the fire attack system for the Sikorsky Black Hawk from Aero Union, in Sacramento, Calif. The new Firehawk system can hold 1,000 gallons of water along with close to 30 gallons of firefighting foam. A retractable hover pump and a constant flow door controller are part of Firehawk as well. Mark Zimmerman, president and CEO of Simplex, says that the Black Hawk was an “excellent platform” for the firefighting system and added that Simplex aims to produce a “fire attack product for every firefighting aircraft.” Simplex also received a Japanese supplemental type certificate (STC) for its fire attack system for AgustaWestland AW139s. The STC opens the way for the first of three fire attack installations on AW139s from Mitsui Bussan in Japan. Fire attack-equipped helicopters will now be able to interface with multifunction displays (MFD), eliminating the pilot's need for mirrors to view hover pump positioning and operations.
