FAA Certifies AW139 Ice System

AgustaWestland has obtained full ice protection system (FIPS) certification and introduced a new web-based health and usage monitoring (HUMS) tool for the AW139. FAA certification of the FIPS system comes after EASA approval in February 2010, following a certification process that began in 2004. AgustaWestland anticipates Transport Canada approval shortly. The manufacturer plans to hand over 12 helicopters equipped with FIPS by the end of this year.

AgustaWestland’s HUMS Web Services includes data transmission software, a website to track trends and anomaly detection technology. Marco Sala, senior vice president of customer support and services, Italy, notes the technology “provides a simple set of indicators for the operator’s technical staff, enabling more efficient data analysis.” (From June 2010 Rotorcraft Report)
