Rotorcraft Report: MAX-VIZ EVS-1500 Awarded EASA Approval

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has approved the dual field of view, next generation Max-Viz EVS-1500 Enhanced Vision System (EVS) for EC registered Bell 212/412/412EP helicopters. This EASA approval will also allow operators equipped with the Max-Viz EVS 1000 to upgrade to the Max-Viz EVS-1500 IR sensor.

The new EVS-1500, announced last September, is an addition to the existing EVS-1000 product line that is STC’d and flying on more than 150 helicopters and corporate jets, Max-Viz said. The EVS-1500 features pilot selectable dual field of view using high performance optical zoom that switches from 53 deg wide angle to 30 deg telephoto, as well as improved electronics and image processing software.

The wide angle gives maximum peripheral visibility to fixed-wing aircraft during ground operations and is particularly helpful to rotary-wing aircraft operators who need to clear a landing site from a safe distance, the company said.

The zoom feature provides a narrow field of view that is useful to fixed-wing operators in providing early runway acquisition and detection of incursions during takeoff, approach and landing. For rotary operators, the narrow field of view helps detect hard to see obstacles sooner.

"Upgrades from EVS-1000 to EVS-1500 are quick and easy," according to Jim Tuttle, Max-Viz president and CEO. "The camera and power supply LRU’s are identical in form, weight and power consumption. Over 45 current STC’s for our EVS-1000 are being modified to accept the EVS-1500."

Paravion Technology, Inc, of Fort Collins, Colo., developed and holds the initial FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC SR00532DE) and managed the initiative to obtain EASA approval for the Max-Viz EVS-1500 installation (EASA.IM.R.S.01500) on Bell 212/412 and 412EP helicopters. Both the EVS-1500 sensor and Bell 212/412/412EP EASA/FAA certified installation kits are available exclusively from Max-Viz, Inc.
