Rotorcraft Report: Human Helicopter Contest Grows

PERSONAL

Stratford, Conn.-based Sikorsky Aircraft has increased its commitment to the Igor I. Sikorsky Human-Powered Helicopter Competition to $250,000. The contest, named after the company’s founder and created by the American Helicopter Society International (AHS), awards a person that can develop a human-powered helicopter rising up to three meters and hovering for more than 60 seconds.

Sikorsky had initially pledged $20,000 to the winner of the competition. Professor Akira Naito from Nihon University’s College of Science and Technology in Japan holds the current world record of hovering at 0.2 meters for 19.46 seconds.
