Race Driver in Fatal Crash Had Expired License

Officials from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have determined that the flying privileges of former world champion rally car driver Colin McRae were expired when he and three passengers were killed in a crash involving the helicopter he was flying. The crash also took the lives of McRae’s 5-year old son, a 6-year old boy and a 37-year old man. The AAIB said McRae, 39, was not only aware that his privileges had expired in 2005, but that he had piloted his AS350B2 many other times since then. Just prior to the accident, which occurred near McRae’s home in Lanark, Scotland, a passenger recorded video footage of him flying complex maneuvers very close to trees and buildings.
