Legislation Introduced to Limit Flights Over Long Island, N.Y.
Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y. has called for limits on the growing number of helicopters transporting people to the east end of Long Island. Noise complaints and possible safety hazards have been cited as reasons for limiting flights. Instead of calling for cutbacks, Schumer has introduced legislation that would require the FAA to study the amount of helicopter traffic over Long Island. The report would be due in 90 days and include ways to reduce noise and divert helicopter traffic from homes. East Hampton Airport, East Hampton, N.Y. handled 2,400 helicopter flights in the first half of the year. For related news
