Turbomeca Pursues More Accurate Engine Measures

To support that international safety effort, engine maker Turbomeca is undertaking an initiative to develop accurate, real-time means of tracking each helicopter engine’s configuration and condition. The effort, expected to take 10 years, is aimed at reducing human error in engine (and eventually overall helicopter) maintenance, thus contributing to the accident-reduction drive. (Human error is considered a contributor to 85 percent of aviation accidents.) Turbomeca officials said they validated the basics of the engine monitoring system as part of a multimodal transport research program last year.
