Marine Killed in Camp Lejeune Helo Crash

Staff Sgt. Jonathan Lewis, a 31-year-old resident of Warrenton, Virginia, died Wednesday in a fatal helicopter accident during an exercise at a satellite training area of U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Lewis, who worked in communications, was one of about 20 Marines in the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 when the CH-53E Super Stallion made a hard landing, injuring 11 other service members onboard the aircraft. The training focused on the Helicopter Rope Suspension Technique, a method by which Marines can conduct helicopter insertions and extractions from a hovering aircraft when landing is not possible. "My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of our deceased Marine," said Maj. Gen. William Beydler, commanding general of II Marine Expeditionary Force.
