US Army Researches Future Rotorcraft

The U.S. Army said it is moving ahead with research on potential new component-level technologies for future rotorcraft.

A team from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory completed the first-ever live-fire test of a rotor blade with individual blade control technology in mid-January at ARL's Survivability and Lethality Analysis Directorate's Airbase Experimental Facility 6 and 7, according to an Army press release. The purpose for this, said ARL-SLAD aviation analysis team leader Brian Smith, was to "generate some limited ballistic data that could reduce and/or encourage Future Vertical Lift and to consider CTEF [Continuous Trailing Edge Flap] technology. Matthew Wilbur, ARL Vehicle Technology Directorate's senior research engineer, said the technology may contribute to features such as reduced noise and vibration, and enhanced rotor performance on helicopters.
